Another city is possible!
Since 2013, the Urban Social Forum has been a platform that provides an open and inclusive space for exchanging knowledge, debating ideas, and networking between civil society organizations, activists, academics, and students working on pressing urban issues. Ultimately, the Forum is a truly public and democratic space for people to put forward alternative ideas and imagine ‘Another City is Possible!’
Greetings from the Secretariat of Urban Social Forum! Year after year, the Urban Social Forum grows and expands the critical conversation about what kind of city we want and need, and how cities can be more inclusive of all kinds of aspirations, communities, people, and futures. The Forum was established, and continues to exist, with the mission to advocate and promote a more socially just, sustainable, and democratic city by creating spaces that encourage active citizen participation.
Although the space has moved online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our mission remains. USF continues to commit to providing a safe space for critical discussions and conversations on urban issues — an even more crucial endeavor now more than ever as we navigate through the impact of the pandemic and other persisting urban challenges.
If you are passionate about citizen participation and building a better city — we invite you to join the platform! You will have the opportunity to learn and connect with people from across the world about common issues and promote new perspectives, ideas, and innovations. 7-10 September 2021
From 7 to 10 September 2021, the International Mini Forum invited a network of activists, scholars, and practitioners from inside and outside of Indonesia to reflect on the questions and explore knowledge and ideas about the kind of city we want and need in this current day and age. The International Mini Forum hosted four sessions with more than 600 participants registered to join in total from all over the world, including Indonesia, Brazil, the United States—and came from diverse age groups and backgrounds, from college students and activists to researchers and professors. The Forum was also joined by a line-up of inspiring speakers and moderators from organizations across the globe.

Sambang Kota—as an integrated part of the Urban Social Forum—is a platform that enables more local initiatives in Indonesian cities to explore ideas and activities that promote the agenda and efforts to build better cities. The platform supports local initiatives to develop their capacity to raise more collective awareness on urban issues and provide an inclusive space for exchanging ideas, solutions, and best practices between cities in Indonesia and beyond.
